Hey all, thought I'd finally prove that I'm not all just centipedes... just all "long and squirmy critters". Anyway...

He's an Okeetee phase corn, and about 14 months old right now... already taking adult mice! He looks like crap now, because he's (obviously) getting ready to shed. I'll be sure to post an "after" picture so you get the full effect of the Okeetee coloring. :)

I just got my first snake, an albino cornsnake, this past June. Really neat creatures! It was born "second clutch, 2003" so it's a year? I am still giving it pinkies, but maybe I should be trying bigger things.

I'll be looking forward to the pics of your newly-shed cornsnake. I don't think he looks bad at all now, but I have no idea of his potential beauty...

Maybe i could get an opinion :

I got a aneryxxxxxxx (black and white) corn snake aged 10 weeks, it has eaten 2 pinkies in one week then stopped and changed to a browny/dull cream colour and his eyes glazed over and went bluey and just sleeps 24/7

I was told that this is text book example of a snake awaiting a shed.

I checked him 4 days later - same colour : / but the glze has gone from his eyes, they are crystal clear again, i cannot however find the skin in the tank...

Any ideas?

It may have gotten a little longer but i am inclined to think im imagining it.

Oh yeah and, sorry if im hijacking ur thread mr.I but not many snake threads pop up and your a celeb so urs will get noticed :D

Elizabeth,

If he's second clutch, that probably means the breeder "double-clutched" his mother... they can typically do that with most colubrids that maintain a good size after first breeding. That would typically mean he was born towards the end of summer, early fall, so he's not quite a year old I would assume. Might be though, if the first clutch was early Spring, as corns' gestation is around 39-45 days I think.

Anyway, yes, he could definitely be taking larger stuff by now... you can safely feed a single prey item that is 1-1.5 times the girth of your snake at the widest point. This is in comparison to the prey animal 'squashed down', if you will... don't look at the mouse sitting up with it's hair out, basically go by the head size, as the rest of the body will 'squash' down to a lot less once you account for hair, etc.

You were informed correctly... that is indeed text book behavior. And may I recommend the only textbook you'll ever need when it comes to corns? The Corn Snake Manual

Their eyes will actually clear up again right BEFORE they shed... so, they will stay 'blue' for a few days, and then their eyes clear and they shed 1-n days after that. I would be on the lookout for a skin in the next couple days.

I'm no celeb... if anything I suffer from a severe case of underpostitis. Spend so much time taking care of things around here, I rarely ever post actual animals or information lately. :)

Nice Okeetee, MI. I don't care how many corn snake morphs there are, nothing beats a classic/Okeetee corn.

Hi there Mister Internet,

That is a very nice looking okeetee. Yours is such a brilliant orange, even in shed. My okeetee is in shed as well, maybe it's that time of month. The second pic is what he looked 4 days ago.

You guys aren't helping!!

I have been wanting to get a corn snake for some time now and I just keep putting it off. These fotos are making me really consider it seriously. There are 2 albinos at the local pet shop that I have been watching.

The Okeetees are the huskiest variety, and Kathy Love told me she had some that had had males hit 6' in the past, but 5'+ is more the rule... your normals (classics) and morphs typically won't get quite that big, with 4'-5' being the norm.

Eric, yours is a beaut as well... yours might have more white/contrast than mine...

Thinking of getting a corn snake for my girlfriend. She has decided that they meet her ideals in attractiveness and relative care so we have been reading about them and it looks like something we will do.

One thing I havn't found much on is rate of growth for them. One source said sexual maturity between 13 mo and 3 years. Pretty big window there. So what sort of growth rate can we expect for one? How much can this be regulated or accelerated with feeding regimine?

Also can they be kept comunally?

After!

Time for the "After" pics... :)

I apologize in advance that these look like Picasso renditions, but he was being very squirmy, and I was trying to shoot solo and one-handed... hopefully you will notice the color, which is the focus here. ;)

They can be sexually mature in under two years if powerfed... not that that makes it a good idea, but it can be done... there is one reliable report of a breeder accidentally knocking up a female corn at 8 months with an apparently early blooming sibling... she was only 27" long! Not recommended at all, but that will give you an idea. Adulthodd in Elaphe gutatta is strictly a matter of length, not age.

And no snake are really "communal" ... there are people that keep multiple snakes together with no problems, and there are people that have a story where the details differ, but the end involves one very fat happy snake. It's your call... it is always recommended to house snakes separately except when breeding.

There are also the situations that result in one dead, regurgitated snake and one dead, regurgitating snake.

Cheers,
Dave

It makes perfect sense if you read what he said:

One dead, regurgitatING snake, and one dead, regurgitatED snake. Granted, a snake cannot regurgitate while dead, but it was clever nonetheless... something is lost is the retelling though. ;)
