My corn that I got a few weeks ago rattles its tail a lot when it get a mouse and when I try to pick it up. I thought it might go away, but it still does it. I got it about 3 weeks ago btw. It does not strike though. When picking it up i put my hand by it so it can smell me first and then i pick it up and then within just a few seconds the tail stops and it is pretty calm. And when i dangle the a dead mouse and it strikes it, it rattles as well, so i guess it is fear and excitement. Will this eventually stop do you think? It is big enought to take fuzzies and i dont think it was handled as a baby so i am guessing if it is to stop it will take longer than if it were a hatchling.

Yes they rattle when they are frightened. As the snake gets older and more use to it's surrounding, the rattling will stop. It's part of their genetic makeup (a flight or fight that all animals seem to have).

LOL - We had 3 corns that did that exact same thing - I had totally forgotten about that until I read this post. I believe they eventually stopped rattling unless they were startled, but it's cute coming from a corn lol. Enjoy it :D

That's a pretty corn! I have three. When they get bigger, they really attack the prey, and constrict it. It's funny to me, because I feed them frozen/thawed, so it's already dead!

Yes, I agree, lovely baby. IguanaMama, my ball python does that as well, and he only eats frozen/thawed. He always gives his prey at least one good squeeze. I think it is just so much a part of how they feed that it is automatic for them.
