i was always under the impression that crustaceans, as arthropods, were invertebrates (ie. they do not have a backbone, unlike mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians)

Nice collection. Your B. boehmei is really nice looking. BTW, Triops, and all crustaceans ARE invertebrates. Any animal that lacks a backbone is an invertebrate, with the exception of hagfish and lampreys which have notochords. I would say they are more of a distant cousin to horseshoe crabs than ancestors. Horseshoe crabs are chelicerates like arachnids. Triops is a genus of shrimp-like animals called branchiopods. They are most closesly related to animals like Daphnia, Clam Shrimp, Fairy Shrimps. Horseshoe crabs actually are not even crustaceans. They are more like the living ancestors of scorpions and spiders.

Nice collection. I notices in your B. boehmei enclosure that the half log has a HUGE staple sticking out of it from the manufacturer! Pull that out with some pliers man! I don't even want to think about the ruptured abdomen on that beauty.
