That blue color is most likely caused by an iridovirus called isopod iridescent virus or IIV. Infected pillbugs or woodlice have a blue color to them. Unfortunately, I don't have any good links on the offending iridovirus. You might dig up something in a web search.

wow...a virus..do you know if it kills them,or just changes them? I think they look awesome. What about the orangish brown ones? They are more orange than brown, most have dark, dull orange bodies peppered with grey spots.

The blue virus eventually kills them. If you want to keep the blues, you have to keep pumping in the regular gray ones occasionally to keep the population going.
It seems a bit immoral though.

well they are in with a population of about 200 pills, but i havent seen any new blues really...i guess I will seperate the blues out,and maybe turn them loose,or keep them for a bit.I wont intentionally infect something with anything.

Is the iridovirus actually passed on to offspring or is it something that is picked up through diet or environment? Hmmm...how big are the blue ones you found, Finman31? Are they adult size? Just wondering because if they're born carrying the virus but can survive to adulthood...why would it be immoral? We are just talking about "bugs" here, after all. Breeding animals solely for the pet trade could be seen as immoral, too. ;P (I'm really just joking :))

I think they're pretty cool looking. If you decide to keep the blue line going keep us updated. :)

Am I blue? Color me: infected!

Hello,

The blue isopods are infected with a virus as stated earlier. The blue is a symptom of the infection not genetic. When you isolate blues and keep only blues they die even faster. Isopods eat dead and decaying things including other dead isopods. This is how they contract the disease by eating other dead infected isopods:eek: One should not condone or encourage the propogation of diseased animals. here is a link to a picture of the screaming tangerine Isopods I have. I have heard they are immune or resistant to the virus. http://exoticfeeders.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10032/2-Isopds.jpg
I am getting better I can post links to my pictures:clap: maybe soon I will learn how to post attachments directly instead of just links. I still type 2 fingers and look at the keyboard!1{D

"I got the Blues"

The blues are caused by a virus and even though they are very pretty to look at they are hard to maintain as a colony and will infect any other Isopods exposed to them so proper care must be taken when handeling them if you maintain several colonies of Isopods. The IIV virus also renderes them sterile to my research, so reproducing is tricky but easily conquered.
Hey Digby, nice pictures man but you could have waited for me to post mine first....

Any way they are recommended as a purely observational pet and are to be enjoyed just for there color.

I have about twenty like that, but they are being released this weekend,I also have a couple dozen orange that I have found. All my "blues" are adult, and have been removed from the rest. They act normal, but i dont want to create a breeding ground of infected pill's.

Wouldn't the practice of keeping off colored pill bugs doomed to die be comparable to when people used to dye baby chicks for easter? They are "fun to have around" and don't live long enough to be annoying?????

well come to think of it I do have some deformed crickets every now and then.. does anyone know if pillbugs are the only isopods that get infected with a "color changing" virus?
