So you guys may or may not remember me, I had a bearded get sick and die on me, so I replaced him with a new baby. He/she is doing great so far, eats like crazy, nice and thick, and very attentive. But every time I try to touch or hold him, his sides and neck flair out, his neck turns black, and he tries to kill me.... what do I do? I really love this little guy, even though its pretty much a love/hate relationship, and hope that some day he'll get used to me. Do you guys have any suggestions? If so, that would be great :)

I'm currently attempting to tame down a savannah monitor. And while it hisses, bites and tail whips the heck out of me.There is not a shred of doubt in my mind that given enough diligence, positive reinforcement and determination he will come around. You must keep trying, you will win.And even if eventually he doesn't tame down completely it may learn to tolerate you enough to be handled periodically for cage maintenance.Remember this is a reptile not a dog.Approach it as such, appreciate it's individual personality and care for it regardless.

Beardeds are mostly all bluff just come in from his side and pick him up, just keep your fingers out of his mouth and support his body he'll calm down in a minute or so ( coming from the top is preditaroy, and can send him into fight or flight mode)

:( I've raised Dragons for years, and never had one baby that was like that... He doesn't hate you, he is just scared. As was mentioned earlier, bearded dragons are all talk, they're not going to bite you, they're just going to act tough or run away. Just hold him more often, gently, slow moments, try just petting his face. tap the tip of his mouth and see if you can get a little lick from him :)

Savannah Monitors on the other hand, I'd hate to want to be the person to try and tame one of those haha. They are wild! But I've seen it done.

My sub-adult actually bit me the other day. Usually he's calm and I can go in to grab him, but since he's gotten bigger he's gotten more attitude along with it. However, like everyone else is saying, they just fluff up for show since I'm still able to hold it and hand feed it.
