Mouse gender bias?

We breed mice as feeders for our snakes etc. We are trying to get more females but we seem to get an extreme male bias. Has anyone else noticed this? It is possible that we are inadvertently killing off more females than males at the smaller sizes but the disparity is quite large. Out of a group of seven subadults, there is only one female!

Perhaps it is because male mice are less pleasant pets. They have to be housed alone, male rodents tend to dribble, and some aren't as soft. Maybe those are just the pet cast offs!

Actually the disparity we have noticed is within our breeding groups. We seem to end up with more male than female offspring.

We're not getting them from a pet store, we're noticing it with offspring from our breeder mice.

LOL please read carefully b4 replying.

I have not done any reading on sex determination in mice but I wonder if switching out the males you are using as breeders for new ones may help?

Wow guys... READ, then reply ;)

I noticed that same ratio in my own breeding... out of a litter of four that I bred from my favourite mouse, they were all male! Out of a litter of eight from my second favourite female, I had two females.

Strange!

You can sex them when they are tiny though..
