Is it just me or do other people with snakes still jump every now and then when their snake lunges for the food at the end of the tongs? Lol….

I don’t know why I do it but I still jump even though I know the snake is going for the mouse. Some times I drop the mouse near the snake lol, then ill just pick it up and the second time around he/she grabs it without issue.

I <3 tongs...Haha

the other day, my kingsnake was having issues striking at her food, and almost got me a few times (even nearly bit herself!). I generally don't use tongs for feeding, but I will with her from now on (and she's been switched from live to pre-killed because I don't feel confident in her hunting abilities anymore).
other than that, it doesn't really scare me or anything... generally they know what they are doing, and will only get their prey. Especially if you use tongs, lol.

I guess what scares me is the fact they will take what seems like forever to strike at it (because they are getting ready to strike or smelling it) then when im not expecting it is when they go for it lol...

Sidenote:

and the other day i was wondering why my king snake couldnt catch the mouse I was feeding it, i realized it was because the snake was actually in shed mode and its eyes were very blue (at first before i even tried to feed the snake i didnt look for shedding proof) but then when i seen how the mouse kept jumping out of the way, i immediately took out the mouse. And no harm came to the snake or the mouse or my hand lol..

yeah, they can be pretty sneaky, and it can be scary!

my kingsnake is just old and stupid. She's about 12 years old, and was fed a mouse once a month for most of her life. So she's tiny, thin (although has been putting on weight with me), and just not very good at killing her prey. She misses when she strikes, and can't wrap it right... so we go with prekilled now, which she's less than enthusiastic about, but still eats after poking at it for a minute or two...
