Mother's day was the first truly nice day my little corner of Western New York (state) Has had this year, so my mom had me working outside. I took something to the garage and noticed a nice little spider in the window. I stuck it in a jar in the recycling, then went out to the garden. I flipped a few rocks, and found about 20 largish ground beetles under a total of about 7 smallish rocks. I should have kept them, would have made nice feeders. Then I flipped another rock to discover a nice big Stateoda-ish looking spider. I dumped the jar of ground beetles and nabbed it. I found a Gnaphosid under another rock. Then, raking the after-melting layer of leaves out of the garden, I grabbed a small wolf spider. SMALL wolf spider, but nice. Later I took a hike to the local creek. I was only expecting to catch a medium sized wolf spider or 2, but I was hoping in the back of my mind to catch a Dolomedes scriptus. I got 2 last year, and they were nice pets. Right away, I grabbed a smallish wolfie with an egg sack, then dumped her out of the jar to make room for a slightly larger one, a Lycosa Species. I was planning on heading home when I flipped a rock, and just sitting there was a nice scriptus male. I turned the jar over to bring it down over him, and I'm just so lucky that my lycosid didn't fall out. I kept flipping rocks, and ended up with 5 scriptus in my jar, 3 male, 2 female.
