bugmankeith: "What's that sticking out of it?"

I was hoping someone would tell me. It had apparently just finished making that cocoon and was resting. Presumably the protuberance is what assisted in the cocoon construction.

Another oddity. When I tried to handle it, gently lift it off the wall with a leaf, it leaked or spat a substance that almost resembled human blood in color and consistency. I'm not sure which end the liquid came out of.

Moths dont make cocoons. thair larvae do and then the adults emerge. I believe the abdominal protusion is for spreading pharemones, it is occasionally seen on exotic lepidoptera.

Oh goody! Now I get to bomb you with questions!
What is with this moth in relationship to the cocoon? Purely accidental? The cocoon appeared to be unpenetrated and still fully intact, occupied. Is there some benign way of confirming that is the case or is this obvious? Was the liquid possibly the pheramone substance?

Please also give me the DUH of the year award for thinking it made the cocoon.

Do they lay their eggs in that fashion? I assume not but you never know.
