Hello :) I was wondering if anyone knew any way to control mozzies without harming tarantulas? I used to use these refillable plug in burners, the active ingredient is transfluthrin, but I can't find any information on whether this is harmful to spiders?

Female Mosquitos, the only ones that bite btw, lay their eggs in Still Waters, Ponds Puddles, Pools etc.

Look around the property for any sources of standing/stagnant water.

Barrels, Tires, Buckets etc. Dump em out or get rid of em.

Mosquito Larvae are aquatic.

@Ultum4Spiderz has blown the conch! Somebody hold my beer!

Alright folks, let's take a look at some DIY, eco mosquito control. First and foremost, 'mozzies' find their prey through smell, body heat detection, carbon dioxide (CO2) detection, their vison, and psychic powers (not this last one). According to research, smell and CO2 detection are their primary means of finding you, and they both are conducted by special organs on the mozzies' bodies; the reason why insect repellent works so well on them. If they can't 'smell' you, they can't find you.
Mosquitoes hunt by following 'scent' trails and honing in on what looks tasty. On other times, they buzz around, hoping to pick up a trail. Anything that can effectively hide your smell and CO2 signature will render it harder for them to find you or their living space. You can do that with...
Chemical means: like a homemade citrus peel spray on your person or near your doors and windows, or repelling oils rubbed on your person or doors/windows. (careful not to touch or get this on invert pals!)
Physical means: a small floor fan or ceiling fan can blow away or muddle 'smell' trails, making you harder to find. Aim them at you and the mozzies will also struggle to fly through those hurricane winds to find you. You can also remove CO2-emitting things from around you by taking out the trash more often or keeping your open can/cup of fizzy drinks away from you.

The goal of a mozzie is to target you and any other blood-juicy critter around you, and repelling them is easier and safer than killing them. Spraying insect killers isineffective as there will always be zillions of mosquitoes in the enviromment. Killing them within your vicinity can't gurantee that those somewhere else won't just move in and replace them a couple hours or days later. Insecticides also can impact your health or those of your pets. The best way to handle them is to lift up your defenses with some of the methods listed above (I chose what worked for me when I was deployed in Africa and what was literally the Mozzie Motel). I made an aromatic citrus peel spray (you can look for recipes online) and doused myself and my window frame, spraying my bed as well. I also bought a floor fan and aimed it at myself. The mozzies still were around, yet I had no bites when I was in that area!

Last bit: What is up with transfluthrin?!
This stuff is a pyrethrin-based insecticide. Pyrethroids are naturally-derived from plants, but surprisingly potent at killing inverts. It is unfortunately dangerous to all inverts, spiders included, on contact or when airborne around the animals.

eliminate any and all standing water around your yard i would use indoor bug zappers rather than chemical based ones since its satisfying for me hearing them fry and burn in the bug zapper:D

I made a thread on this a while back, search Thermocell. For the results of my query.

The more beer you drink, the more mosquitos will come. Thats one of the only factors that seem to attract more mosquitos, that is documented and has been in the news: its my pet peeve. Mosquitos. And i tried everything. Also, i like beer. I know. I see the difference.

i use lavender essential oil, pale long clothing, merino wool, thick cotton pullovers, smoke.

When all else fails: i am the one who uses DEET.

i dont use my deet clothing around my tarantulas. I have clothing i use for outdoor deet use: it avoids problems and is easier to manage for washes etc. Deet will also destroy clothing: be advised.

mosquitos also have prime activity times: dusk and dawn. Im a heavy birder and those are the best times for observation. Swamps, bayoos, wetlands: worse places. Tall grass? Crazy weed unmaintenaned property? It will be great for wildlife, and mosquitos.

Dark shaded humid places: mosquitos.
I also need to add that i am a keeper who has chosen to live her life. I can’t afford anxiety on my tarantulas. I burn incense in the house, and do many things you shouldnt.

I am definitely not an example. But i guess i am gaining experience here on what happens when you do what you shouldnt and that will go 50/50. So far, no one is dead.

Great information I had to clue , that they had mosquito repellent clothing. I don’t drink beer because stomach issues and I rarely get bitten by mosquitoes despite a lot of sugary food and coffee. ☕

Certain fibers are harder to go through. And certain colors attract more. You don’t want to be sweating, so animal fibers like merino are awesome.

they do sell outdoor clothing that is mosquito repellant. But some of those could have chemicals. Like pyrethrin and such. The others are repellant because of the fabric, color and breathability. Quick drying as well.

fashion is lame anyways: we should all be loading up on outdoor gear. Its going to be the only way to be comfortable with what is coming in terms of weather. Besides, green is such an awesome color. And beige is so beeeige.

i also reccomend to travel in groups; with people who have no outdoor basic knowledge. They will all wear cool black stuff: the mosquitos will go to them.

So many news articles in one of our few reliable news media released a bunch of articles this year. When i read that, i knew why my battle was feirce. I read so much on the subject. Almost got a job as a marsh and woodland sprayer to learn more. I hate mosquitos with a passion.

the only good thing about mosquitos, and i cant say if its true, i learned as a young kid while watching the magical school bus. The episode on the cocoa beans in the tropical forest. Apparently they could pollinate and thats why we need them. There though: aint no cocoa beans here.

pretty sure something else pollinates cocoa beans.

nooooooooo dont wish for free roaches its kinda gross to have them coming out of your drain pipes connected to the sewer mains that get peoples dirty shower water not counting who knows how much poop and pee that roach has crawled through just to get into your cleaned bathroom shower and your bathroom sink:vomit:

Roaches shouldn’t be aloud to escape they dedicate and dry out and die . You can our a larger cage around them like a moat too . I don’t even have a job right now. My roaches just can’t escape. I keep addding security measures I don’t have room for a cage inside a cage . I’m digging up my one with locking lids soon the file plastic clear container. You don’t want your feeders are dying everywhere.. or getting potential pesticides on them. Talkin to op lol I don’t know who’s losing roaches just advice . Escapes wrecked my colony before .
