Alas, I have fallen in love with rats thanks to my little Miss Nelly the dumbo rex. At the reptile show today I bought another dumbo rex, a hairless and a plain old rex. Add that to Miss Nelly and Blondee, the weanling I picked up for 50 cents out of the "snake bin" at the last show I went to and I'm now up to 5. They are just so smart and so much fun. I sure wish that they had longer life spans though...

I used to keep and breed rats and I must agree with you. They are surprisingly intelligent and affectionate pets, I used to take mine everywhere around the house on my shoulder. I even trained some of them to run different obstacle courses set all around a room that involved jumping, climbing, tunneling and solving small "puzzles", and they excelled at this because of their capacity for independent thought processes. In my opinion, they are the best small furry pets beside cats and dogs, and this is coming from someone who has owned rabbits, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and has worked with ferrets. Have fun with your rats and keep us posted about all of the neat things that they do!

we are down to one...his brother died last month.
I keep saying we won't get anymore, but we all know that is a lie!
They are just too cool of a pet to not have a couple around!

Sorry to here about your little fella moving on - too bad you are so far away because I think that there's a good chance that two of the females I bought are already pregnant despite their young age. I'll be looking for homes for the babies or more cages...
