The species from Riverside CA is APHONOPELMA EUTYLENUM!!!! I have 5 males and am dying to get them out to people who have females. Anybody interested? They are a beautiful species:

Atrax: If you need a positive i.d. on these babies, telephone Tom Prentice at University of California Riverside @ 909-787-4733. He's a great guy, very knowledgeable and LOVES to talk about our pretty little locals!

it's much more tan/brown with goldish/orangish highlights... it might be a color variant, but the pic also seems to have slightly pronounced tarsal striping, where any is extremely faint on thid girl...

MizM, I remember the info you shared with me. :) My apologies for not following up with the pics of my (now Josh's) specimen. I can't begin to tell you how busy I have been the past couple weeks. Anyhow, I would still be interested to know if it is the same species you have males of.
Josh, it's important to remember that many Aphonos can change color fairly dramaticaly throughout an instar. If it is the same sp as Mizm's males, there's a good preeding opportunity for ya, bro.

See ya.

I had a fem that died about a year ago now.:(

Tried to breed her a few years ago... Mated her to at least 15 males, of which she killed about 3. I was working in one of the local pet stores and word got out and next thing I knew people were bringing me males left and right!! I was SWAMPED with em! Wound up with about 25 or so of 'em I think it was... Most were not in great shape, but the most active I gave a shot at her... (the li'l slut!)

She had the run of a 60 gal terrarium with about 6" of substrate and was kept in the kitchen where natural outside temp is the norm due to the way this place is heated/cooled. She dug a nice burrow well prior to the matings and everything but never laid an eggsac that I saw, never got fat, nuthin... Mighta been a subadult and just wasn't ready to breed though. She was a little small, but then I am not sure how big the local T's get.

Founder of the CCTS and a Dr. of entomology told me that (if I recall correctly what she said) ppl have been trying to captive breed these for 10 years or so at the time, and no one had been able to get one to drop eggs... Supposition was that there was an environmental element that they trigger on to do so that no one had met yet, or that there were mulitple subspecies that were not geneticly compatible and no one had gotten the right pair together yet. That's why I tried so many males and tried to keep her where she'd get the closest to natural temps as I could provide indoors. I even watered the tank when it rained outside to copy the local environment as much as I could.

What's the current info on that anyhow? Is there more than one ssp of Aphen here in central/southern Cali or just this one? And what is the breeding info currently availible on them in the trade? (Links to such info would be appriciated)

The females change DRAMATICALLY after a molt! Mine was the same tan/brown, I named her Hershey! She molted out to a beautiful black!

All of my males are black with a really neat greenish/bronze carapace, the color is really different!

Pleeze Atrax, don't apologize.... I'm sure you have things going on that are just a LITTLE more important!!:D

Yes, thank you Atrax! Inuleki brought me the new babys at work, so I could check them out. I was expecting two or three, not six! I'm not complaining, though. The red phase is BEAUTIFUL! We sectioned off a 29 Gallon aquarium and put her in one side, and my first T, a brown phase rosea in the other side. The colour difference is amazing! Beautiful T's, thank you!

And thank you for not sending Inuleki home with a Pokie, you would have gotten it right back! :D
