Just saw a Craigslist ad that made me wonder about mature male P. metallicas. The poster was selling an 8-month-mature male Poecilotheria metallica, stating that he is "still lively". How long can a P. metallica male go before reaching his "expiration date"? I know every tarantula is different, just looking for an estimate.

Just my experience.

Pokies don't "degrade" over time like many other MM's. They continue tapping, making sperm webs, and roaming right up until death. They have a typical lifespan of 1.5 years after maturity, after which you should consider it borrowed time. Just my two cents.

So do you think it would be a good idea for me to see if I could get him? He's pretty reasonably priced for the species and I always feel bad when mature males don't get the chance to mate. I probably would send him off pretty much immediately.

Would anybody want a 8-month-mature male for a breeding project, or would his age make him undesirable?

Yeah, what Nightstalker47 said. If the price is right, I'd definitely grab it and make a classifieds ad. But they can't be asking very much for it. On the other hand, like I said, MM pokies live a long time. @cold blood, is that P. striata I sent to you still kicking it? How long has it been, going on a year?

Well, he's giving me a great deal, and I'm getting a couple other tarantulas from him, so I'm gonna get him and see if anyone wants him.

I believe @Blue Jaye has several females that are ready to be bred. She may want to set up a loan.

Yep...recently paired him....well 2 months ago....went well, although he may have been a dud from the start....but he still makes the occassional sperm web and eats as well as any MM I've had. He still looks great as you see...and zero loss of grip, like you see when theyre winding down. I just took this pic a minute ago. 20180224_155926.jpg

op, while he may be past his prime, its certainly feasible that he isnt.

I know my AF violaceopes came from a pairing with an MM that was a year and a half old...so its definitely worth trying if you have a female or one lined up.

If you have a female at the ready and the price is right then go for it.

If not, though, then I wouldn't bother. Just because the seller states it has been mature for 8 months is no guarantee, unless it is someone who is really trustworthy. Have you seen images and such to confirm it is not really an 18 month old MM that is a month or two away from expiration?

At least the seller indicated it is a MM and is not trying to hide that to make a quick sale for some unsuspecting buyer, so that does speak for his/her credibility.

I would go with this seller, they've made it clear it's a MM so it's not as if they are trying to hoodwink anyone - It would be better if you were 100% certain of when the "Ultimate molt" was - but they seem to be honest with the description of MM, good luck if you go for him. Hopefully a MF is awaiting his arrival, if not then I would wait until a MF is at the ready, so to speak.

I'm not the OP

I got him, and he looks pretty good. He certainly seems to be healthy and there looks to be some fresh webbing around. He's difficult to take a picture of, but this might give you a idea of what he looks like.

He looks good to me.
I currently have an old MM im borrowing from another member here and i was told hes pretty freaking old.

Hes cycled through both my females no problem (cohabbed 1 month with the larger girl) and the 1st one he paired with is already candling yellow.

Im not so sure spiders go sterile. If theyre still active, eating, tapping, and producing sperm web they have just a good chance as the next fresher guy
