Does anyone here know any specific details about how this is done?

I was procrastinating recently and came across the wikipedia article for Bill Haast, which briefly touches on the practice.

I imagine that it is expensive (purchasing the snake venom) and that there *are* effects from the venom interacting with your system, but I won't deny that it would be pretty damn cool to be able to take a bite from a venomous snake and just slap a band-aid on it.

Start small and work your way up. I really dont recommend it though. It would be way too easy to accidently inject too much, theres the risk of anaphylaxis, and it would only work for that one venom. If you self inject for a C. atrox, it won't help much when that C. s. scutulatus tags you. Its a stupid idea, and the chance of you dying from it are greater than if you dont do it and have an experienced mentor teach you how to do things properly and safely.

I agree - for a pointless thing that only gives you idiotic "bragging rights", it's way too dangerous. Why not instead consider a career in venom extraction? There are very few people willing to do so in the U.S., because of the risks, but antivenom production relies on these few people who risk their lives to save others.
