Hey guys, so last week two nights in a row i come home from work (im on nights so 2 am) i find a tiny millipede crawling on my kitchen floor, about 2" long. I have no house centipedes or silverfish so i know its not a moisture issue. I am just wondering if anyone knows what millipedes are usually found in the st. louis region of missouri... i live south of the missouri river as well.

Arter searching the web heavily last night and this morning, I regret to inform you that it's really hard to say what species that is. The thing is that it's getting cold out and your house is warm so they seek it out, at least that's what I'm assuming because I know in New Orleans that's what happens this time of year with millipedes in large numbers. Do you ever see any larger ones or are those 2" ones about the biggest you ever see?

Both i found were about the same size... i tires researching too with no luck, thanks for taking time to try though man! Ive just never seen millipedes in any place ive lived before so it had me thinking, "one time's a fluke, the very next night?! Astonishing!" Ive checked and havent found any since though... i still have them both, would it be better for them to let them free or keep thrm?

Personally id'd throw them in my garden or giant feeder breeder tank to add nutrition to the soil in there but I wouldn't keep them as pets by any means because they are so small. If you want a good species of pet millipede that's fun to interact with and watch for cheap, look up Orthoporus Ornatus. You can get them for under $10.00 and they get pretty sizable, I even know of a locality where the species reaches 8+".

See, "pet" is a matter of opinion. I for one love tiny inverts and even prefer them to some large ones. If is interesting to me, then I will attempt to keep it, no matter the size. I have kept 5 mm long Blapstinus sp darkling beetles as pets, they still can live almost as long as the larger species and are just as easy to keep, (breeding them however, is another story...). I understand some people only want the big species, but I personally find the tiny ones can be just as interesting.

Yeah I'm one for bigger inverts but I have my share of little scorps and a few small cantipedes too. It's all personal preference. I would figure letting them go is what's best for them but if you had a little enclosure for them you could keep them happy and healthy with ease I'm sure.
