So I found these little guys in my house, right on the door jamb of my sliding glass door (inside the house). All together, I've gathered about 25 of them. It's getting cold up here, and I'm curious about what I should do about them. I like millipedes, and don't want them to freeze. Are they babies? Do they normally hatch this late? Are they going to get any bigger? What should I do with them? I posted on another board, and was told that they probably belong to the family Julidae.

Best pictures I could get. The longest among them is about 3/4 of an inch.

Babies

Hello,
I am not an expert, but I dont think most fully grown millipedes are that small or are found in a massive group. Those 2 elements make me think they are babies (whose parent may be hanging onto the underside of the sliding door). Im pretty sure they can fend for themselves if put outside...but yes it might be difficult. If you want to house them until better weather is present, you can get a mixture of (non-toxic) soil, old leaves, and old bark, put it in a plastic container (make the dirt at least a couple of inches high and moist), add bits of vegetables and fruits (I think the tiny ones eat the same things as the bigger ones), and keep the cage above 70 degrees. I would also suggest a couple of sticks or a store bought wooden hut for them to hide under...may increase their comfort level. Most websites say that they will get enough water from the things they eat, but I still plan to offer fresh water. It's up to you.
I only recently learned most of this, as I prepare to house my own millipede.

Well said Voni, I use Eco-Earth coconut fibre as substrate, throw some veggies or fruits (even dried dog/cat food) in there, scattered around.
And those aren't quite babies, they're juvenile, the mother might be somewhere close but I doubt she cares about them!
Go to wal-mart or something and get a plastic tubbawear box, you can use your own judgement on how big it needs to be, they don't need a LOT of room, but they dont like
being over-crowded, if you provide fresh water make sure you put some rocks in the water dish so they don't drown, good luck!
