Ok so, here's the question. If you walked into petco by any chance and saw a Mexican Red Knee tarantula for $49.99, and it was about 3" would you buy it? Yes? or No?

I'd ask to take a close look at it and if it was female, yes, if it was male, no. If they wouldn't let me look at, I'd turn around and leave.

While I've heard of people finding females out there, every time I've examined a juve smithi myself at a petstore it's been a male.

If I found one for $49 I would be very tempted, and if they would let me examine it and I found a female... Well, it would be on the way home with me :)

if i found a T in my neighborhood pet shop id throw a party and put little party hats on my inverts =D
too bad politicians are idiots, why ban inverts? not like they can survive in the wild for too long
and no i wouldnt by it, i dont trust pet shops, i think theyre dirty, never know what can be crawling in its book lungs

Because there's just so many things that can use the booklungs as a vector pathway to infest your T, and scientific study has demonstrated that petstores are their main breeding ground

There's a lot of problems with petshops. They rarely provide Ts with proper water supplies. They rarely feed Ts properly. Housing is often adequate at best. Still, being rife with T pestilence is not one of their shortcomings.

prob yes

since I'm not interested in breeding at this time, I'd buy it even if it turns out to be male. Every pet/reptile shop in my area that carries them go for $75-$100 (juv) , always looking for a deal.=D

I bought 3 or 4 from petco that were marked down to 49.99 from 99.99 and 2/3rds of the group were males. even if it is a male @ 3" you could still have it for several years before it matures.

Atavuss!

Do the petco's in your area frequently carry them? if so, can you post or send a PM, with the name and location. I'm going to be in Sacramento for the reptile show the 2-3 of August.

Thanks

William, I have only seen the petco here carry the smithis the one time when I bought all they had, I have not seen them again here. you will probably be able to find some at the reptile show in sacramento.

I would definately buy it for that price! Im getting a 2" female for $90 canadian. So a 3" would be even more, even if it is male they are still good looking T's and they still live a long time.

Thanks, i will most likely get it soon, my petco doesn't have it IN the store, but the lady in there who does teh invert/reptile ordering let me look on their computer at all the species avaiable from their dealer, and it has the species, size and price, and i found that. I have a really wide rang of T's i could get from petco now from their dealer because of this lady that works there, she's really nice, but doesn't like T's but she could get me anything, and i would pick it up the day it arrives at petco, so it wouldn't have to deal with their housing. I would also get out of paying shipping! So that's a plus. Well, thanks for all the feedback, i think i'll be getting a mexican red knee real soon! :)

They can get alot, it was a really big list, i was suprised, but they usually only order the most common, like G. rosea, or A. Avic... But they could get a whole bunch of different ones if they wanted, i don't see why they don't but they woman told me, whatever i wanted off the list she could get from their dealer. There were alot of T's on there i couldn't possibly name them all. I'm sure if you go to your local petco and ask to talk to their reptile person, you could ask them if they could get... whatever you want, and they could tell you yes or no.
