So I got an enclosure and everyone said it looks good on here but I recently fully found out about the dangers of mesh lids. I had a smaller A. Avic that would go up there and was fine and even webbed close to it as she seemed to like the ventilation. She sadly died recently and I got a mature female A. Avic and she does the same thing just not as much. I can’t afford a rehouse sadly. Should I try to see if I can replace the mesh or should she be fine?

I felt I was well read on tarantulas but I seemed to have a lot to learn after I got her sadly. I’m just glad everyone in here is so helpful and kind

What is the mesh made out of?
Have you used the mesh lid work any other types of animals?
I never had an issue with tarantulas and mesh (except for one brachypelma who chewed through fabric mesh and escaped).

If you have any doubts that there may be something harming your tarantula wouldn't it be cheaper to temporarily house the T in another container rather than risk it getting sick/injured?

The mesh is metal, I’m not sure what kind. I didn’t have an issue with Elizabeth and my new one is exploring it currently without much issue.

I’ll be able to tomorrow, it’s the exo Tera tall terrarium with the foam rock background
The issue with those metal mesh lids is that they can get their tarsal claws stuck in them. Some specimens never do it, and some do it a lot.

But remember, it only takes one time to cause a potentially dangerous injury if it struggles and hurts itself.

You need to replace the mesh. There are posts on here of Avics getting caught, and I think one even died.

My A "metallica" would always get stuck in the mesh. I had to free him once, and I put an end to that.

If you risk an animals life, that's on you. Just remember, your risk/mistake doesn't affect you at all when it dies, just the poor animal that was in your care. You are responsible.

That's what my A metallica was in...GOOD LUCK if you don't change it :rolleyes:o_O:(:wideyed:

What would be the best way to replace the top?

Recommend changing the mesh to something else, acrylic with holes drilled in etc. I bought an enclosure with a mesh lid once and put one of my B smithis in there, she got her fangs stuck in it. I actually had to very carefully force her fangs back through. Thankfully they weren’t damaged but I learned about the dangers of mesh the hard way

I just want to make a clarification about Mesh! There are 2 types: woven and solded. It is the woven mesh that are the bad ones, no matter how large or small the holes are. It is in the tiny gap, between the two strands laying on each other the tarantulas getting stuck! Not in the holes themself
There are solded mesh with pretty large holes, reminding of perforated sheets but the distance between the "holes" are much shorter cos it is a "mesh". This kind of mesh lacks the gap between the strands, cos it is solded. And are exellent as ventilation in terrariums. I was searching for those when i builded my own terrariums, but they are rare to come by!
