measuring your T???

How do you take measurements of your tarantula? Someone asked me the size of my T and I didn't know what to say. I don't know what measurments to take. When someone says "I have a 4 inch T", what do they mean? Am I supposed to measure front to back leg span, side to side leg sspan, body length, body width?
