I could be wrong, but I thought that for most (if not all) sexually dichromatic tarantula species, the males look identical to the females until the mature molt. Then, even if they displayed the bright colors before, they switch to the mature male colors that you'd use to identify them as mature. But I could be wrong, so I'd wait on a more experienced opinion. As for the reindeer moss, I've never heard of it, so I can't help you with that.

How did you arrive at the conclusion that it's still 'very young'? That looks at least like a large juvenile, if not an adult. It also looks to be in very bad shape. Pet store pick up?

Differences between 1.0 and 0.1 are like night and day: 0.1 are "that blue", 1.0 not that much.

I agree with boina, to me isn't a young one at all.

I was about to say the abdomen looks very skinny and the legs look strange

I got a blue cobalt today and I believe it may be a female due to the slight blue on its legs but it's still very young. Also wanted to know if "reindeer moss" is safe for the tank?
It's not young by any stretch of the imagination, looks to be a good 4"-5". I've never heard of "reindeer moss" so I can't comment on that - one thing I will say is it needs a good drink and a big fat roach/mealworm/anything it looks half starved, hopefully this isn't your first spider and you know how to keep this species - good luck!

While we're waiting for this guy to respond, whats the genus for this friggin species? Haplopelma or Cyriopagopus? I type in either and still got results for both and it's super confusing.
Figure itd be ok to ask here because of the confusion on how the name is supposed to be :troll:

Cyriopagopus lividus. Everything else is wrong

Pretty debatable, I didn't heared von Wirth opinion so far :-s
Personally, I still have trouble thinking of Haplopelma as Cyriopagopus, a genus with completely different spiders. I'd like it to be changed back. But I think it would have happened by now.

Looks to be in pretty rough shape. Probably a kijiji special. If by reindeer moss you mean the phony dry crusty moss you get in retail packages at the pet store, I would say neh neh, you can do better. You can buy retail bricks of compressed moss that is way cleaner and you get more for your money.

Comes in a dry bag of assorted décor from some big box type pets stores and or craft stores. Garbage IMO.

The only 'reindeer moss' I can find is sold as 'preserved' which sounds like a bad idea to me. Personally I'm a fan of this pink moss, but blue would probably accent her better.

Sphagnum moss is safe to use however. OP sounds very new to tarantula keeping. Hm. Pictures of your set up would be useful.

Rescue from a poor keeper. It's in pretty bad shape, and I say it's still young because I was told it "hatched" just a few months ago. But who knows if that's true

Hey man, we get so many people jumping in the hobby with spiders they probably shouldn't have for years. Thanks for clearing that up. ;)

Can you post pics of it's cage? I wouldn't bother trying to feed for a few days till it's settled in.
