I just watched a vid of two OBT's mating. It was done in a darkish room, but you could still make out what was happening. However the guy shooting the video was using a regular flashlight and shining it directly onto them.

Now is this OK to do or is it more of a distraction to the T's??

But doesn't the direct light distract the T? Whenever I turn on the lights, my T's tend to run and hide. I would imagine a flashlight to be brighter.

When they are mating, there is no distraction to the male. He knows what he wants. Also the female is put into lets say a kind of trance when the insertions actually start. I would not recommend shining the flashlights at rarer species. Plus, OBTs will breed readily and in almost any conditions.

Where is this video?

the lighting in my room is absolutely horrible, and was worried that the camera wasn't picking anything up (and I wanted the owner of the other spider to be able to see what was going on when he saw the video).

I've never had a problem shining lights or with dim lighting interfering with mating ...and as previous poster stated, OBT's are surprisingly easy to mate; this was the first mating that took place and things went pretty smoothly. What you can't see is that outside it was actually sunny, and my room's so dark I still need a flashlight :). As long as I see that the male and female are 'enjoying each other's company', a flashlight doesn't do harm.

That's good to know as I thought that it would have been a distraction.
