I have a free-range mantis, green in colour and very common though I cannot offer you the name, roaming my kitchen. A week or so ago it laid eggs - presumably - in a 1.5" long cocoon-like eggsac.

How long do you reckon before the nymphs appear?

Since you are in South Africa it's pretty hard to say what species it is, but nymphs usually hatch within 3-4 weeks.

Hard to say like eclipse said, but depending on the season, the egg-sac or ootheca may over-winter. I found one last year before it got cold and it hatched about 7 months later. If there's enough warm weather left ..like eclipse said. Is it headed into the cooler season over there?

Yeah, we're solidly into Fall right now, and the female has left the eggsac/tube and disappeared. :?

Ime, most ooths around these parts hatch in Oct-December... never seen fresh hatched ones this time of year.

Where exactly did the female lay? (just out of curiosity).

Ha! By that time I will have sold my home and moved on. The new owner is in for a shock! {D

She laid on the inside of an exterior window frame, and then just scarpered...:D
