Hello all,

I wonder if anyone could help with the identity of this mantis photographed on a recent trip to Central America. It was found in Costa Rica near Selva Verde. The mantis was on a large leaf and remained there for about a week. I guess maybe some type of shield Mantis?

Thanks for looking.

Awww, snap. Beaten to the punch. I agree on the Genus. Species, I think, is rhombicolis. Nice.

Carol Meier at the Victoria Bug Zoo had these in culture a year ago. She'd collected them during a trip to the Amazon.

Peter- I had no idea that there is an insect zoo up there?!? Is it very large?

Aside from Victoria being the neatest place within decent driving Oregon and Washington (I take the ferry from Port Angeles and it's like 6 hours from Portland), the Bug Zoo is amazing! You could say it is small, but you can fit a lot of bugs in a small area! Each time I go I see a number of species I've never seen before. Not hard to believe considering the diversity of bugs out there, but kind of hard to believe since I've kept most in the hobby. They had a Sydney funnel web on display last time. The lid was ajar (though it couldn't climb).

Victoria has great food and lots of touristy stuff to do.

Grab your best girl and go...go now!

zonbonzovi.... I posted a few pictures on the Field Trip section.

We loved Tortugero. Unfortunately no turtles but loads of interesting things to see.We actually took the little co-op boat from Puerto Viejo Sarapiqui to reach Tortugero. It was six hours on the river and the wildlife was everywhere. We saw some huge American Crocodiles. Would love to return someday.

Thanks y'all.

That croc's coloring is great- I've never seen one w/ a blue cast to it before. I saw scores of those jellyfish in Mexico- watched people ignore them only to pay the price later- great schadenfreude people watching. I may have to dig out some pix.

Victoria's alright- newlyweds & nearlydeads aside. I always dug their natural history museum & all the street food. The real gems are up north: the large provincial parks, the inner passage between island and mainland, etc.- it's also an awesome place for caving i hear.
