Come in from doing yard work. Doing the dishes and feel something crawling on my face so I unthinkingly slapped it. A darling tiny baby mantis squashed flat. Now I feel terrible.

They don't just max out the adorable scale, they own it.

You have a good heart. It is a natural reaction though.

What would you have done if you had missed it? Would you have kept it for a while or released it?

Definitely release it but giving some thought and maybe a little research as to what would be the safest little slice of heaven for it. Probably take it to one of the temples where they strictly forbid pesticides and are big on environmental protection. Give the little spork the best leg up I could, Maybe next time I won't be so quick on the draw.

They are very cute I have a Cryptic mantis, about instar 4 or 3, she is quite voracious, think if they were your size they'd show you no mercy so although it is a shame don't feel too down about it

I might sound extremist about protecting animals and finding safe environments for them but I simply make use of a common feature here in Thailand. Within 5 miles of our house are 15-20 temples. Temples double as community centers. On the temple grounds proper conduct is expected which extends to conduct regarding animals. So readily available animal sanctuaries a few minutes in any direction. And at a few of the temples I've come to know the abbots personally and know which ones strictly adhere to the Buddhist respect all life principles. My favorite temple being surrounded by wilderness on all sides (and a VERY mean bike ride to get up there. Lowest gear 20 minute slog.)

Just checked in after a few years. I remember the the tarantula that lived in a hole. Still finding neat insects you have a bunch of neat insects there.
