i know females are more aggressive but does anyone know any other differences between the behavior of male scorpions and female? i am trying to guess the sex of my hottentotta tamulus which is still too young to sex. i know i cant know for sure until I can but im trying to get an idea since this species doesn't show that much sexual dimorphism. thanks..

Put your hand in -
If it attacks it's male
If it retreats it's female.

You absolutely can not sex a scorpion based on temperment. The sexes can swing both ways.

In general, in Buthids, male pectines are longer and larger. They usually feature basal contact or overlap. Females do not have any basal contact or overlap because they are smaller and spaced wider apart.

Male pectines -> /\
Female pectines -> / \ (no contact or overlap where they meet)

Now this pics are very helpful. But until you are familiar with the animals side by side comparisons with expert guidance are almost mandatory. This appears to be an innate part of the brain that needs training.
For example, I took over a stable with 25 head of horses. close examination and familiarity gave me the ability to tell mares from geldings from stallions. But after a few days I could spot sex, breed, condition and innate habits of the individual horses at a glance.

Well I do see a little space on min it's more of a space than on your example of a male but less of a space than that of the female. It's kinda hard to tell. What do you think outpostsurvivor?
Well pectines can pivot so you have to make sure the space between them simply isn't produced by the orientation of the pectines to each other compared to a natural space of Buthid females.

Yeah that space isn't cause of pivoting. Think it's a female. Yess!!! And thank you again
