I noticed last night that my H. maculata female was acting a bit odd, so i put her in an ICU with moist paper towels. Later i tossed in a dead roach in hopes she would try to eat it.

Turns out she was in bad need of a molt, and tried molting right-side up. Well, she died during the molt. This was the same female that gave me a big, healthy eggsack back in april.

My main reason for even posting this is to point out to the newer tarantula keepers that is doesn't matter how "experienced" you are. This kinda stuff is still going to happen.

I would say she lived a good life; she had plenty of food and space during her stay with me, and even produced an eggsac (and she may have produced more before being in my care, i'm pretty sure she was WC).

I have had this happen a few times with different baboon spiders.
It seems like if the female has an egg sac to late in the molt cycle, she don't have the strength to molt when the time comes. If i breed a female baboon (African spider) soon after a molt I have not had this problem.
I am trying to keep more detailed records to see if there is anything eles that may contribute to this problem.

That sucks! I lost mine about a month ago, before the male matured.

So now I'll have a MM with no female to breed him to. :wall:

This spider was one of the few i was actually going to be able to keep... so maybe i can get another. Once (and if) I do, you are more than welcome to send him my way.

That's interesting... are there any species of baboon spiders that do this more frequently than the others (that you have noticed)?

same thing happened to my H.mac. I only had her for 3 weeks as an adult *CB* and it died rightside up in a wet molt.

Is that a baby T in the ICU with the H.mac and the roach?
Looks like another roach to me.
Joe is correct, that is just another roach that i tried.

Guys, these last couple days have been nothing but crap.

First this girl dies.. and today i finally open my versicolor eggsack... almost all the eggs have that milky white color to them. :(
