Hi all,

I got this little fella with a Red Trap Door Spider and came labelled as Macrothele sp. I housed the two of them in identical set-ups: deep tanks with tunnels carved in florists Oasis.

The Red Trapdoor spider did as it says on the tin and promptly made home in one of the artificial burrows and added his little trap door made from vermiculite and web right next to the glass which is cool.

This black one just sits in a little cave and has made no atempt to burrow, cover himself or even make a door or flap. He is as grumpy as hell all the time striking as and when anything comes close. (before going into the burrow the Red one was more agressive, rearing at me and striking every few seconds. This stopped when he found the burrow in his new tank)

As I said, he was labelled as Macrothele sp. but I'd love to get him ID'd. Could he be one of these:

Here's the Red one:

hi, to me both look like trapdoorspiders. The red one is an Idiopidae. the first one (labelled as Macrothele sp.) looks like a Ctenizidae to me (the carapaxe is very high on the eyetubercel..I´ve never seen anything like that on a Macrothele sp.!)

This little guy came `labelled` as a Macrothele but I'm well aware he's not. I just want to try and pin him down to species level if I can.

The red one looks like Stasimopus robertsi, or atleast the ones that was imported as such.

Hi,

The red one looks like Stasimopus robertsi, or atleast the ones that was imported as such.
the latter. Stasimopus robertsi does possess a different eye arrangement than the usual pet trade "Stasimopus robertsi". The pet trade "Stasimopus robertsi" is some kind of "front-eyed trapdoor spider" (Idiopidae).

all the best,
Martin
