i am considering getting an african slender lungfish (P. annectens) in the near future, and i was wondering if anyone had any experience.

and yes, i know they are powerful biters, grow to 3 feet long, and can escape their tank live for quite a while.

You might want to double check, but I believe in some states they are illegal to own, and there may be strict import laws in the US.

well, if it was illegal where i live, i don't believe one would be up for sale there.

Maybe not, but trusting retailer stock as an indication of legality is less than brilliant. I would check to make sure.

As for advice or experience, I have none, but I agree that they're awesome.

i tink you can find lists of banned creatures on the US Fish & Wildlife site

good luck though, i was checking on something i was thinking about getting and it is freaking annoying to find

also, i'm pretty sure i've heard some or all lungfish are illegal b/c they can spread so easily and tend to wipe out native species

well, there's only one and i doubt even a lungfish can find a large body of water from the area i live at.

but i'll look anyway.

one more question: would it get along with a tiger shovelnose, a marbled achara, a gray bicher, and/or a clown knife?

I'm definitely not a fish expert, but I've heard that lungfish can be pretty rough on their tankmates, even fish of equivalent size or larger.

i know, but if i can get a clown knife, a tiger shovelnose, and a marbled achara to get along (all of which are roughly 8-12 inches)......

but it's only a back-up plan, if i can't work in another tank.

Are these also known as sharkheads? A friend of mine was talking about them a couple weeks ago and sound just like these lungfish... Greg

I think he just didn't know what he was talking about? I have heard of lungfish before but not sharkheads, I know close to nothing about them so I thought maybe they had another common name?

Are you thinking of snakeheads? Those have been problematic in many areas.

Maybe that's what he meant but he did say sharkheads because I even repeated it to him and he said yes. I have never heard of snakeheads either though?
