So one of my local pet stores was selling what they called a red leg trapdoor spider from Asia any ideas what this might actually be? Also is this legal for them to sell? I didnt think you could sell trapdoor spiders in LPS. Sorry I have almost no knowledge of true spiders and they didnt really want me to take a real look or pic up the container. They seemed very nervous about having it there.

Not to be nit-picky, but trapdoors aren't true spiders. They're mygalomorphs, just like T's.

Other than that, I know nothing. It seems a little sketchy that they wouldn't want you to have a good look at it. Maybe it's a spider they caught in the store that they labelled as a red leg trapdoor to get people to buy it, so that's why they don't want you to look at it.

When I googled asian red legged trap door, I saw a place selling them online (they also had it labelled Asian red trapdoor) and they had the scientific name as Liphistius sp. But that's pretty much all I found.

i would highly doubt it being a Liphistius sp. in a LPS. my guesses would be that it is either a Latouchia (as endo suggested) or a Gorgyrella. those are the more common red trapdoor spiders. but who knows, right?

and they wouldn't be illegal, i've seen all of them for sale. it does sound like they're trying to hide something though. maybe they don't know what it is, or it's a MM on it's way out...

Yep ...read above couple posts. ...Does it have a segmented abdomen?
Careful with it ...bite could be a real wallop! :)

Why bother, regarding this fact, AB has never been. ;)

I didn't get a look at him but I felt bad for the little guy he ha less then half an inch of dirt and has monded that up in two places. The container wa about 8" wide. This pet store is the same that tried to sell me several Ts under the wrong genus names. H. mac does not pass for a pokie very well though.

I didn't really think it'd be Liphistius sp. either, but that's what I found when I googled. I know next-to-nothing about trapdoors, so I could only offer what google could tell me, haha.

If it's not expensive, buy it and post a picture. That's really the only way to try to narrow it down. Gorgyrella does sound like a good suggestion though.

I almost bought it was $29 but I wasnt sure if that was a good price or if it was even a trapdoor because they were being kinda weird about me looking at it. perhaps because they are faster and have a stronger venum the most of their animals

trapdoors are the biggest "pet holes" ever.
you'll never even see them unless you dig them up or rouse them out.

I'm an LPS in the pacific northwest, and I can sell what is sold to me as a "red legged trapdoor spider". I didn't get one for the store on the last order, but I did get one for ME. For the price you're talking about, they may have got it from the same wholesaler as I did, so I'm wondering if it's the same spider. I was hoping for a true ID as well, since it doesn't really act like a tgrapdoor. I'll post pics in a bit.... this sucker has HUGE chelicerae, so I don't really mess with it much!

I just took a quick pic... he kinda freaks me out a bit, so I don't "disturb" him much!

Any resemblance to the one you were looking at?

Most stores double to triple the cost (since we have to pay a crapload for shipping, as well as the price of the animals), depending on whether they get locally-or in my case from Florida. I think I got mine on "special" for about $10 (regularly about $14). Tack on a couple bucks per animal for my share of the shipping (I got about 7 animals on that load), and he probably cost me about $12. 'Ya can't quote me on that, though, because it all depends on what it costs the store and where it came from. Some people have local contacts that charge less and have no shipping, so the animal is usually cheaper in those cases. It all depends!

The dude doesn't show any inclination to burrow, but he sure does lay a LOT of web! He didn't eat at first and acted quite sluggish, but he eats well now. I'm a little surprised he hasn't acted very "quick" with his movements since I was under the impression that they were quite quick to move and bite. It could be because I don't actually move him around much. I just feed and change his water when he's on the OTHER SIDE of the container. Maybe I'm just too slow and careful to get much of a reaction out of him? How does yours act? Has he actually constructed a "door" of any kind?

awww thats a good price!!!!well i traded for mine a while back but its cool, mine was never verry fast at all it started for the first week not burrowing but as soon as i made a started burrow she went in great little girl ( i think sexed like a T) first time i saw it eat, 3 crx in the tank she came up very slow, picked the first one up bit it then let go. second one same thing, then it grabbed the thrid on and took it down with her

o and if i rember right this species dose not construct the door like structure they just burrow and cover it up, then emerge to eat. i wish they made the cool trap doors * im pretty sure this is corect but if im wrong i have had one for about 5 months with out a door lol ill post pics when i have time

Mine has never even shown any interest in burrowing.... but I may need to give it some deeper substrate, too. I started a burrow for it when I put it in the container, but it has so far ignored it! Ah, well... it's certainly an interesting spider even if it doesn't do the whole trapdoor thing! I've also never actually seen it eat. I put a cricket in, watch as it recoils from the initial touch of the cricket to a leg, turn away for 20 minutes, and it's gone! He seems to make VERY short work of disposing of the bugs!

YAY!! Mine finally dug a hole!

HA! My guy finally burrowed!! :D I check on him every night since his container is mixed in with a bunch of my geckos, and when I didn't see him, I KNEW! He burrowed straight to the bottom and ended up in a corner, so he's totally visible from down below. Very cool! I wonder if this means he may be getting ready to molt or is finally just comfortable? I don't actually see a "door", but it looks like he may be constructing one? There is a light dusting of eco-earth hanging mid-air over the entrance to the hole... kinda cool to look at and wonder what's holding it up? {D{D:D
