We have been adopted by a dog. A young abused little gentleman with a good heart and a horrible tendency to cringe. Having only trained horses, and assessing this dog is definitely never going to be up to snuff to turn in an entry exam at M.I.T. I've been keeping his training down to an absolutely minimum to wit: "Get in the yard. Get in the yard..." repeat ad infinitum while demonstrating the difference between yard and street. With a horse the job is easy. You get on it and show it the no and yes until it gets the idea. I kind of doubt mounting up on a 15 pound frightened cur is going to give the desired results.
Well, this morning I'm on the porch putting on my shoe. I then hop around a bit trying to find the other one. The dog determines he isn't in for a beating and vies for my attention. I pick up the shoe and put it down again and tell him, "Give me my shoe." Repeated, repeat repeat. It doesn't seem to be sinking in. Oh well. Too complicated.
So I come back this afternoon, park the jeep way down the street (elderly jeeps have a turning radius just slightly larger than a 747), walk down to our driveway and start the routine as the dog crawls under the gate to say hello. I start in, "Get in the yard, get in the yard..." as I open the gate. Hopeless. I finally gently shoo him onto the porch. He starts to follow me and I do the hand waves and repeat a few more times. Then I go back to the jeep, swing wide, come around the bush and there's the dog at the entrance to the driveway... with my shoe.
