Hopefully getting a few of these soon and just wondering whats the easyest material to work with when building the housing. They need plenty of air flow so only really need to build a frame which i was thinking of building out of timber but then i have to make sure it hasnt been treated right? As that could kill them off? If the wood is untreated would i have probs with rot?

You could try to build a screen cage such as these. They are constructed with the same material screens for windows are made of with metal screen pressed in.

not sure if these are forsale in australia or not but i would imagine those reptariums made for chameleons sold at reptile shops would work well

Lord Howe Island stick insect (Dryococelus australis)
Dryococelus australis is a large, heavy-bodied species . On Lord Howe Island the species was found in large cavities in the trunks of living trees, they are nocturnal feeders.

As far as I know is a protected specie since they tought to be extinct. It is listed since 2007 as a treatened specie.
(IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. <www.iucnredlist.org>.)

Well anyway if you are able to keep some.

they are ground dwellers and therefore need a medium size terrarium with humidity and hides. I will also put some braches or bark so they can climb to molt. They have a quite courious behaivor, were the male spends a lot of time with the female, the will sleep togheter and the male waits until the female drops the eggs so he can them bury them in the substrate were they will hatch in a few month (around 9 or so)

MAKE SURE YOU RESEARCH THE FOOD PLANT SOME PHASMIDS HAVE SPECIFIC FOOD PLANT (Melaleuca shrub that is were they were found)

I will ask the Melbourne Zoo as they were conduting the Breeding project.

They should be able to tell you the right conditions how to keep these

Phantastic Phasmid :D

Good luck with them, they are some of the rarest phasmids species.

regards
francisco

PS By the way they have similar requirement to E calcarata,E coricea, E horridum
