Hello,
I have kept other millipede species before but I have been debating on getting a Giant African Millipede recently and I'm looking for more care information on taking care of them like minimum/ recommended enclosure size, temperature, substrate type, humidity, ground decor, etc. Any advice and guidance is very much appreciated!

Ooh I did a bunch of research on them, aren’t they just gorgeous? I want to get one but I changed my mind and got a few smaller varieties instead. They’re fairly easy critter, a lot of the upkeep is pretty logical- just think about how big they are and what it would take to keep them happy :)

One of the main things with an African giant millipede (imo) is enclosure size. The bigger the better honestly, but the best size is this (sorry if it gets confusing!):
The height should be twice as tall as the millipede is long, as they like to clamber up the sides of tanks occasionally you don’t want them to end up on top or (worse) escaping. Of course, this makes for a terribly tall tank as the giants get up to a foot long😭 Make sure it’s tall enough that it’s tall enough that the depth of your substrate won’t be an issue!
The tank width isn’t a huge issue, just make sure there’s plenty of space for a happily coiled millipede.
The tank length should be very long as well, at the very least as long as the millipede.

Millipedes are easy to feed, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables make them happy. Some people also use fish flakes, though I haven’t used them before. There’s a variety of opinions on diet, I suggest you look around!

One more thing is substrate- with mine (even though they’re only 3 inches long) I use a base layer of damp moss, thoroughly rinsed with water to make sure it retains humidity well. Then on top a thick, THICK layer of dirt, plenty for them to burrow around all they want (they’re amazing diggers). On top of that I have a thin layer of dead leaves (they’ll munch on them sometimes) and on top of that I have pieces of wood, usually large, hollow ones are perfect, big enough for your critter to curl up inside for a nap. They’ll also chew on the dead wood.

For water, I suggest just a small dish filled up, I wouldn’t be too worried about your giant drowning as long as you keep it shallow. Also keep the dirt fairly damp as well, especially since the giants like it hot and humid!

Hope this helps a little, if you end up getting one then post pictures! I love the gentle giants :D
