Well, I was going to delve into planted aquariums as soon as i got paid and have done some research. I bought a book on it and it is very helpful its called "Mini Encyclopedia: Aquarium Plants" by Peter Hiscock, you should look into that if you want to spend the cash(was about 15$ at Borders). other wise try these following websites they have pictures and prices and good reviews(petsmart/petco have crap for plants but you could try specialty fish stores):

http://www.aquabotanic.com/

http://aquaspotworld.com./index.php?session=a3f316970c1b3df7ea0e136505162cf4

But in MY opinion a cool looking plant has got to be Crinum Natans (African Onion Plant) and Blyxa Echinosperma (Giant Japanese Rush) both pretty large plants. Hope that helps!

PS. You could always put in Rams horn snails or Cherry shrimp, or even some FW Crabs or African Dwarf Frogs, but i don't think any will eat the plants save for the snails, but you could combat them with assassin snails(predatory :D)

Sorry for the late reply, yea plecos live nicely with plants and definitely help w/ detritus and algae clean up. when i finish my tanks i want to get some rubber lip plecos they are cooler looking than the common black ones, and they get to be like 4-5 inches not 1ft like the others :D
