Latrodectus Hesperus is the only native species in Alberta.Ha! Cool find. My mom cleans apartments and she came across this little fella in medicine hat, Alberta! Cool find. She also found a scorpion but it got away before she could get a picture. There's a few different types of widow in Alberta I'm pretty sure. Either way, thought i would share! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paruroctonus_boreusI thought I heard somewhere there was 2 or 3 species of widow. Oh well, these ones are still cool. I told my mom to catch it, but she's not as friendly with 8 legged creatures. But I forget the name of the scorpion that's native to Canada, but yeah no doubt it would be cool to catch one. I got fingers crossed I'll stumble upon one in drumheller in summers peak! Lol too bad you cant keep native reptiles.I'd love to catch a bull snake!
There are three species of black widow that inhabit USA and Canada, but only the Western black widow (Latrodectus hesperus) is found in AB and BC (and down the Western edge into California). The Northern black widow (L. variolus) can be found in the very southern reaches of Ontario, all the way down to Florida (really more of an "Eastern" widow but that's not how it's named). Then there's the Southern widow (L. mactans) which does not extend far enough North to reside in Canada, but has a pretty far range from East to West.I thought I heard somewhere there was 2 or 3 species of widow. Oh well, these ones are still cool. I told my mom to catch it, but she's not as friendly with 8 legged creatures.
