I've never tried canned crickets (neither have my tarantulas).
I go with live (the RARE occasions when I use crickets...I can't stand them). Seems to me that the canned would not have the appeal of the live for a few reasons, not least of all being they are DEAD LOL
In other words, not moving around, so the T will not sense any vibrations. Also, the canned ones probably don't contain the moisture content of the lives ones. I think there was another thread on this a couple weeks ago. Do a search, and you can probably find it

What about the big black crickets I find in my yard? or other local bugs....would they hurt my T?

They won't hurt your T anymore then the crickets you buy at your petstore, but the crickets and other bugs that live near you may have some pesticides on them. After awhile the bugs get kinda immune to the pesticides, and live. When you feed a cricket which is full of pesticide to any of your T's, it's not unlikely you T will die, just because of the pesticide... (hope this made sense :))

When we don't have the money for crickets my husband feed them small grasshoppers or moths and they eat them fine.

When I feed my Ts crickets, they normally get a freshly thawed one. I can't stand the noisy, stinky critters myself, but I get them at 3000 at a time. Then I freeze them and put them into small ziplocks about 25-30 each so I won't thaw too many at a time. I let them sit out and get up to room temp and feed away. All mine eat them unless they are in a premolt fast pretty readily, and some have 6-7 at a time. I have 3 colonies of roaches and pinkies for variety and their need to have "kill"... I do occassionally give them the bigger black crickets that are wild caught in the cowfield that is pretty close too. I've never seen any spraying in the area, so I pretty safe using them... though I don't feed anything from this yard as it gets plenty of chemical cocktails.

I think that the frozen crix are a lot better than tha canned and they are tons cheaper if you can buy them in bulk quanties. And you don't have to worry about them bringing other pests like mites to your Ts as the freezing kills those too. And best of all, you don't have to worry with live ones
