I bought some Cork about 3 weeks ago from a well know UK shop it's sat it a spare tank for those 3 weeks. Yesterday I got it out to cut it up for sling vivs and 20220516_213822.jpg these little spider are in it. They all have tube webs that they won't leave, there is about 6 of them most are tiny with one exception a 2/3 cm one that happily took a mealworm from my tongs . I got a good look at her, big oblong abdomen 3 legs on each side pointing forward bk legs stay attached to her web pretty sure they are tub web spiders but unfortunately couldn't get decent pics as they are really fast and my phone doesn't want to pic them up 20220516_211502.jpg
If any one else has any ideas what they are they feel free to chime in coz I am not 100% , if I get any better pics as I attempt to house them today I will add them to the thread . the 2 pics I did get that came out are of one of the smaller ones.

Interesting! No idea what they are, but I think it's cool - I've picked up some cork tubes before that have had some pretty thick webs inside them and I've always been disappointed not to find the spiders that made them. 🤣 I'm pretty sure this stuff has to be heat treated before shipping, specifically so there aren't stowaways, but I can always hope that something really cool like a Psalmo or Tapinauchenius species might be in there!

Would be cool if they were from abroad but pretty sure they have moved in as it was stored in the shop I ordered from.

I definitely will am hoping the pics will pick up better while it's daylight coz trying to take pics of a 2/3 mm whole under florescent lights at 10 pm isn't fun 😆 . Must admit I didn't half jump when the bigger of the 6 popped out n attacked the paintbrush I was using to clean up the web I thought was empty 🤣🤣🤣

The naturalist point of view is in situ takes priority. Grab another tank and some more bark and leave your mystery friends alone.

That is exactly what I have done , large tub so I didn't have to brake the bark n risk hurting them an inch of sub to stop the bark rolling about n again causing injury ordered some fruit walks n am leaving them to sort it out hopefully they will be fine together as they came that way . Fingers crossed when the flys come n I can feed them I will be able to get better pics . The biggest one took a micro meal worm last night so I don't think she will come for another today coz her abdomen was huge already n the others are to small even for the micro worms. There are 12 all together one about 2/3 cm and the rest maybe 1 cm if that . I will update as I get more information on my little mystery spoods 😆

Name suggestions for this little spood crew are welcome 😁

That's awesome you basically got freebies with your order 🤣
Whatever the species is at least you know they'll be very low maintenance. Since they've been left alone for 3 weeks and are doing fine

Yes I did 😆 first time I have ever gotten free anything from that spood shop 🤣🤣🤣 , think they are segestria I think florintina as they have solid colour on their legs rather than sploches or stripes like the other 2 sp of these here in the uk also known as green fangs 😁😁😁 (you know I was excited when I found out) the info says they are hard to keep as they are picky about where they build their webs and wont take food without their web but am hoping I will be able to keep them as they came with their webs already 🤞🤞🤞

You got some awesome freebies at that!
It seems like they've settled in pretty well already so I wouldn't be too worried

Have you named them yet or are suggestions still open? Because the name Florence came to mind when you said the name of the species. . . And while I was writing this Florence and Tina came to mind as names 😂😂😂😂😂

It shall be so 👍 maybe we should call them Florence and the machines as a group 🤔 Florence could be the biggest one 😄 i checked on them this morning non were out but all have started building more trip wires round their webs very cool 😎 I can't wait for these flys to come so I can watch little spiders popping out everywhere 🤣🤣🤣

Florence and the machine came to mind with me too. That would be a pretty iconic name for them as a group. And would confuse people when you talk about them out of context 🤣🤣

Sounds like they're settling in nicely 😁
It sounds like they're also doing well communally. Have you seen any signs of agression to each other or do they just kinda keep to their own space?

They stay in their tube webs never seen any of the little ones come out only sitting in the inside of the entrance and they seem to have spaced themselves apart so hopefully they will be OK as is as they get bigger I will try n separate them if I see them out looking for a bigger hole and there is any aggression they seem to be happy on corkbark with lots of holes just under the surface not through it so I will try and provide the same again. Florence and the machines it is 🤣🤣🤣

Ah I can't lie, I'd have cacked it. I really don't like S. florentina, far too... Spidery. Got quite a number in our garden and frequently see their legs poking out at night. Super interesting, don't get me wrong, but they do scare me quite a bit. Still some arachnophobe in me.

Recently got some cork off eBay - I might have to examine every piece now :lol:

The green mouthparts are a give away for Segestria florentina. Here in the states we have a spider that lives almost identically, it is just a dark brown all over though. Enjoy your guests!

Have you told the shop about this? Sounds like their cork bark store could be full of these things!

Yes, they refunded me because the cork isn't usable fir obvious reasons and said "the spiders were interesting and i have no idea what they are but they look really cool" 🤣🤣🤣 I don't think they care tbh but if you buy corkbark off the spider shop make sure you check it before you boil, microwave, bake, or use it .
(Idk if I can mention the name of the shop but if it isn't allowed can the mods please remove it thank you.)
