A few months ago, we were out eating at a restaurant, and captured a female jumping spider. We brought her home, and I let her go in the spider room. Well, the other night, I was feeding the lobster roaches, and whom should I spy, but the jumping spider...seems she found the cafeteria! Every time I see her now, she's got a lobster roach nymph in her fangs.
Not the best pic, but you can see what I mean....she is so cute!

How can you tell if a jumping spider is male or female? My mom caught a jumping spider, which was all black and very small. We put it in a smallish vial and have been feeding it, flies, moths and tiny crickets. Its finally molted and it now has whitish markings on it carapace...its really very pretty. But I'd love to find out if its a male or female.

Laura,
I'm assuming she's a female due to her size, and the fact her palps are not enlarged...but I could be wrong :)

I got her out on the cap (surprisingly she didn't run) and I do believe it is a female. I've never seen the jumping spider with the white markings. What I usually see is the green or yellow ones, so she's really different and a voracious eater.
