Creating a somewhat natural environment red was my go too
Seen a lot of red light at night?😜

I used red eons ago, waste of $, just use a very low white light or a moonlight ie blue used for herps minus the heat generation.

If you are asking this after having watched certain videos, then perhaps a type of grow light. Or leds. It doesnt have to be red. If its just to mimic diurnal settings, anything will do if you are willing to turn on and off. But remember the sun, it dims.

so i guess my question is, how did you come upon then idea of a light. Those who use lights with tarantulas, usualy use grow lights because they have plants. Or leds. You dont need a strong light. Because it will be directly over the enclosure.

what species are you wanting to use this with?

you will need to consider the moisture needs of your tarantula; some lights emit heat.

i can see this thread in the tarantula discussion threads. Its scientific and à propos.

@kingshockey brings up a point: if you dont have your tarantulas in a cabinet, and they are exposed to normal light and its cycle, then supplemental light might not be needed. I wanted to bring this up but got carried away.

my tarantulas are exposed to natural light. Even with my home lights on, they mostly all start doing their business at the same time. Around sunset and after.

Which you need to consider if you offer a light source. A cycle of hours. Which is the only way to provide anything close to nature. There is night and day. Dawn and dusk. Thus why dimming is important, in a way.

I think generally the only need for lighting would be in a bioactive planted setups, but even then most plants used in bioactive setups have a pretty low PAR demand.
I have been curious if numerous strong focused point sources of light like a strip of led diodes could "annoy or stressout" a T so I'd always recommend using some type of diffuser but my curiosity could be completely off base, eitherway, personally I'd try to use a type of diffuser if using stronger LED strips to be safe.

that right there. Its all about how you do it. If you put the lights very high, it just mimics the sun. And of course, it needs to be cycled.

i dont think lights will bother tarantulas as much as we think. Many of them are in their burrows because the weather is extreme. They adapted to darkness. Thats also probably why they can feel and smell everything with their hairy legs.

if the light is used delicately, it will just be like the sun.

i dont use led strips yet, because my tarantulas are in the living room. They are exposed to sunlight, at a distance of about +10 feet. Some are out in the middle of the day.

when dusk comes, and its a treat for the eyes, they all start popping up at the same time. They also have dark corners. The side of enclosure closest to the shelf wall. So they can decide where to be.

Curious observation: my nhandu color, built her burrow opening in the BRIGHTEST area of the enclosure. And some mornings, i see her right there, just chilling.

i personaly would not put my tarantulas in a closed closet 24 hours a day. I believe they need a circadian cycle.

i am also not saying its wrong. I do my thing, others will do theirs.

i think its good to have a conversation about it, and let people think and do their research.

just look at jumping spiders. They are not tarantulas, but they are still spiders. Tons of spiders actualy need sunlight. Just food for thought.

Live update: this is My nhandu color. Its FULL sun outside, 10:30am
