I just lost my AF C. schioedtei last night… does anyone know the natural lifespan of that species? I feel like she was young to die. Only about 8 years…

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you. It seems like other than some of the hobby staples, tarantulas' lifespans in captivity are just a guess. But even given an average lifespan, there are many variables that could affect the life of an individual such as random variability, temperatures, feeding schedule, breeding history, etc.

Hopefully some people that have kept that species can give you a better idea of a range of expected lifespan for that species. Perhaps @CrazyOrnithoctonineGuy ?

I've not kept a female schiodtei from sling to adulthood before, but of the other Asian arboreals i've kept I think 8 - 12 years is about average.
Longest of those that I've got notes for are L. nigerrimum and arboricola - 13 & 14 years.

That does not sound terribly young. Maybe on the younger side of their age range? Sorry for the loss either way, it's never fun to find.

I have no evidence to back up this thinking but; in the wild the sac will have dozens, hundreds, thousands of slings. I'm sure in the wild it's common for less than 10% to survive. Some maybe it's luck but it's also the strongest babies making it. That's nature. In captivity we have a sac and the stats are reversed. I'd say most sacs in captivity probably 90%+ eggs are good and develop into slings. Their lives are a lot easier too. Spiders we have in the hobby could just be genetically weaker as far as longevity goes. Just my thinking on it, like I said, no hard proof to really back up my logic.
