My first passion is tarantulas.
My second passion is crested geckos. I'm new to these, and am still learning stuff about them almost daily.
The two cresteds that I have now are about 4" from nose to tail-tip. They are too young to have developed the obvious male hemipenal bulges. SOO, I started reading up on how to sex juvenile cresteds...I found some good pictures online and just HAD to give it a try.
So, I carefully restrained each crestie and examined them under the microscope.
On the larger one of the two (they are from the same clutch) I could EASILY see the developing pores! So, the big one is a boy. Cool.
The smaller one, my baby, had no scales even remotely resembling those of the male. I looked and looked, but could notice no pore development. The scales also seemed smaller and "tighter" in that area. GIRL!
I'm so excited. I am getting two more cresties from Frank on Tuesday and I am going to see if I can figure out their sex, too, after they've settled in.
