My Uncle put some cultured rock (concrete made to look like rock) in his garden, and I got the broken pieces. Do I have to worry about any leaching chemicals if I use them in a fish tank? Thanks ~ Rex
I think I've done that before. Many fish are less susceptible to water polutants than shrimps which I keep right now. If it were shrimps, I'd say heck no don't put that in there. If a tiny bit of metal falls into a shrimp tank, all your shrimps might be dead the next day, they are way to sensitive to new stuff being added to their tank. I've added rocks from around the place and here's my input.
1. Those rocks can sometimes absorb stuff so you should definately soak it in hot water for a few days to clean it out. You don't want stuff leaking out. I once found this rock and it ended up leaking all this reddish dye when I put it in the tank. The rock was white too.
2. Many times, adding stuff to the fish tank will change the chemical make up of the whole tank, again, fish aren't as sensitive (I guess that varies). Changes include: the pH level, different elemental concentrations/shifts.
If you wanna try, get a gold fish and put the rock in a different container with it and use it as a tester before actually putting it into your real tank. If the gold fish eats well etc even with the rock there, than your fish should be okay. Test it out
Anyone with much better knowledge will be of better help here, thats just stuff I got from keeping shrimps. When I kept fish, didn't really matter much what I put in the tank, didn't affect them much or not at all.
I found some info on cichlid-forum.com; concrete has been used in creating a rock wall efect for aquarium backgrounds... I'll see how the cultured rocks work in a bucket of water and do some pH tests, before I but them in a tank. ~ Rex
