Lesson Learned

well to begin with I have all my snakes on frozen rats now(thank god) but the twist of the story is this..i was feeding my Ball Python a medium sized rat tonight and she wouldnt take it, so I decided to try to take it out and bask in with a chicken boyan cube...before i got my hand in the cage she tagged me HARD(she was real hungry cause she shed last night) lesson learned was.....DO NOT REACH YOUR HAND IN THE CAGE OF A HUNGRY SNAKE...and for the record she will not be gettin fed in her home no more after tonight...I put my Burmese in a Rubber Miad container to feed and she took the rat right away...so success there too

lol Good story. Certainly have been there before. It tends to make snakes less bitey when fed in a container other than home due to them not associating the hand coming in the tank with food. but you're already onto that one I see.

Yeah, I've got a bad habbit of doing that since I don't have another thing to put them in.

Right now with my red tail, I have to move fast (but not fast enough to freak it out) to touch it so that it realizes I'm not food. Otherwise, if I go slow or linger overhead, that head starts to raise and you just know what's coming next.

The question is, what are you gonna do when your burmese is 15' and 100lbs? Not easy to move around when they're hungry, a bite at that point will be a bit more of a threat. Plus, afterwards, you don't want to be moving a large python with a big meal in its gut. :) Myself, I feed most of my snakes in-cage - saves effort... and it is definitely safer when working with my big pythons.

well I have a while before I have to worry about the size of 15 feet but we are planning something when he does...Hopefully my little Burm will be used to me by then, they can be trained to know the owner and I work with her every night...Time will tell.
