Several weeks ago our Guinea pig died. The house seemed a little empty so we acquired a seal smooth coat G. pig who came with the name Laverne. One morning I went to check on her and there was a wad of something white in the cage. I was prepared to holler at one of the kids for throwing paper towels in her cage, then the 'paper towel' looked at me... (We had no idea Laverne was 'with child'.)
Little kinky coated Curly. I couldn't get a pic that adequately shows his curly whiskers.

Mama Laverne is a deep seal color with one white dappled foot. Her coat is super sleek and smooth.

At 3 weeks of age, Curly is almost as big as his mama. He'll have to be separated from Laverne next week until he's big enough to neuter. We don't be wanting any more pigs! LOL

Thats pretty cool. Our female suprised us with a litter of two. Recently we got another male, and we seen them doing thier thing a while back, so im sure there are more babies to come.

That's what I said! LOL Laverne was a skinny little pig and didn't even look pregnant. She had to have been bred with a Rex or a Texel, one of the ones with kinky coats. She was a shelter pig and I have no history on her.

You might want to separate your males and females. Females can reproduce at 4 weeks of age, males at three, though there are reports of precocious male pigs making babies at 2 weeks. There's not a big market for them unless you are feeding large snakes or a Peruvian army. Our local shelter is overrun with guinea pigs.

I really need to get another pic of them trying to feed these things to a king cobra. We had 15 feet of lethal snake that didn't want anything to do with the little furball ambulating around the cage. Even were arboreal to get away from it.

King Cobra was no dummy. Genetics kicked in and told him cuy was no fare for an Asian snake. LOL This is not PC... one of my veterinarians brought Laverne over from the shelter for me. When I arrived at work, he had put a sign on her little Guinea Pig carrier: "Peruvian Lunchbox".

Well here is the whole story. We kept the original male and her together all the time. Then she had 2 babies. We wasnt sure if the male was a male, but found that out. Then we took the male and put him in a seperate enclosure. The babies were growing fine and doing great. Then one day they werent doing very good, and would just lay on thier sides and act like they were dieing. Shortly after they died. Then the male started doing this to, and he then died. Which really sucks, cause i liked him alot. We couldnt see any reason for them to die. Everything was the same for all of them. The female is still going very strong and doing great. A while back we got a new male, and he was old enough to breed when we got him. He has been in with her the whole time, and still been no babies. But we also wasnt sure if he was male or not. Until not long ago we seen them going at it. I thought for sure we would quicly get overrun with whistle pigs, but it seems like the female isnt a huge producer. So i think it might be ok to leave them together. If there are any babies that pop up, i can give them away. I know some people that would take them. I actually want to build them a nice acrylic tank. Probably about 4 foot x 4 foot.

So sorry to hear about the g. pig fatalities. They are prone to viruses and respiratory ailments and can fail rapidly. :-(

It was easy to imagine cat calls from the python quarters: "Hey, I'll take that!"
Lunchbox. LOL!

Curly on neutering day.

Laverne and Curly

Curly - we've taken to calling him Q-tip...

The new Guinea Pig Condo. They're having a blast running the Guinea Pig 500 up and down the ramp and in circles on both levels.

Wow that is one nice cage! Q-tip curly is very cute. I have rex rats and I love the way the whiskers curl.

Thanks. I'd only had Abyssinians and Smooth coats prior to Q-Tip. I didn't even know they came in kinky! LOL I bet the rex rats are wild looking, too. :)

Worst holiday ever!

But seriously...dig that cage. Did you construct it yourself? It looks like it was made out of one of those compartmentalized wire shelf units. If that's the case, very crafty! Looks slick.

I'm a firm believer in lots of pain meds. He doesn't miss them and was just a bit gorky for a few days. :) He was more upset that he was separated from Mama during recovery.
Good eye. The cage is made from those wire units. I can't take credit though. I paid way too much for it, but now I have the 'recipe'. LOL It's not as sturdy as it could be and I will have to make some modifications if the pigs keep thundering through it like a herd of elephants. They get the whole thing rattling and shaking!
