I was in Tallahassee for a couple days this week and found a few critters while there.
I found a few of these spiders near a retention pond behind the hotel in Tallahassee, FL. The area was surrounded by thick trees, brush, and tangles of blackberries. Anyone have any ideas what it is? Lycosidae? Gladicosa sp.?
The next one I found in Torreya State Park about an hours drive from Tallahassee. It was on a branch a bit over nine feet in the air. The branch was overhanging a trail. I don't know how I saw it. I actually walked under it when something in my head said to walk back and take a look at it. I was amazed to see a Latrodectus. I have never found one up in a tree like that. I have also never found one in the middle of the woods. Please excuse the poor photograph. I had to stand on my tiptoes while holding the camera up as high as I could. I didn't attempt to take it down or manipulate it for a better photo. Any idea what species this is? Latrodectus variolus? Unfortunately, the only thing visible in the photo is the dorsal surface.
