Went out today and found around 10 grass snakes (Natrix natrix) and one european viper (Vipera berus) sunning themselfs.

A few bad pictures of some grass snakes

Those aren't too bad, not what I was expecting. Their coloration contrasts nicely really. I suspect it's not the same with the vipers though, they blend in more?

The grass snakes comes in different colorations - black, olive or brownish, even in the same locality. The vipers tend to be brownish or black/silver grey or all black. I guess the vipers are a bit harder to see under grass but when they sun themselfs they usually are somewhat exposed so they are not all too difficult to spot.

We've recently had a small infestation of grass snakes at a local hospital >link< they've also found a couple of adders but they are keeping that quiet, I think its kind of cool, if I get hospitalized I'm gonna try some late night herping {D {D
