Hello all!!
I purchased a 1" LP about 6-7 months ago. Since then it's only molted once and hasn't grown much in size, actually I don't think it grew bigger at all with molt? I also got a 1/4" sling freebie about 7-8 months ago and it's molted a couple of times since and is about 1/2" now. I've read and heard that they have a "fast" growth rate. Also read that they CAN grow over an inch or two in a year? Does this depend on the genetics of the spider? Is there any other factors that play a part in growth rate? It seems like my T.Verdezi has grown alot bigger than both my LP's put together in the same time span.
Any information you guys have on your LPs would be great help. Thanks everyone!

Factors that can impact growth:

- Feeding
- Temperature
- Genetics

You can only affect the first two. If you want your slings to grow faster keep them warmer and feed more frequently.

Depends on many variables none of which you have provided. Ts always grow due to molt!

This! And I didn't personally own them but I've day to day for years been around them and certainly have watched them gain four inches of more in a years time . No real set feeding times but temps were always in the mid 70's sometimes higher depending on the time of year.
And as viper 69 stated. That's exactly how spiders grow. That is the reason they molt to being with.

There is a lot of variables that contributes to growth. And even if you did everything right, the growth rates will still vary. I still have a juvenile LP that is only 3 inches despite being hatched 5 years ago. People said they grew fast, but not in my experience. Which is to show that it will vary a lot in-between specimens.

Mine was an inch when I got it in May, and is probably over 3 inches with the most recent molt. It has molted 4 times over the summer and put on a good bit of size with each molt. 20231102_123516.jpg
I feed slings pretty much as much as they will take, but will be slowing down with feeding now that it's a bit bigger.

If you think about it.

Unless they fall under:
  • Exact same size
  • Fed exact same type, and size feeders at exact same time
  • Consumed exact same amount of water
  • Pooped exact same amount at exact same time
  • Stayed, moved, climbed, webbed, and dug exact same amount
  • Molted at exact same time with exact same growth
  • And much much much much more
Even then, it is nearly impossible to compare growth rate in between one from another.

I've also had one sling that was just a super slow grower for no reason. C. Versicolor that came in a set of 3 from the same breeder, and one just took a super long, random pre-molt break from eating. For many months, maybe half a year? It just sat there, not eating, not growing, not really even moving much. Same feeding schedule, same temps, same diet for all 3. One matured out male and went off for breeding the start of this year, and one is a good sized adult female. The slowpoke sling is still blue. I expect it to finally start changing to adult colors when it molts next.

That's crazy. Have you ever wondered what that specific spider has going on thats making it grow so slow? My friends every one he has grown right at or close to five years that I've been around him they are massive.

I have a few tarantulas that are like that where people say they grow fast or slow, but are the opposite in my experience. My LP is just a case of being slow growing.

The only things you can really do to speed up growth is more frequent feeding and higher temps. It really just depends on the individual though. It also isn’t possible that it didn’t change size after molting
