I got these at Home Depot, of all places, and was skeptical about them ever hatching out. However, this morning they surprised me, and I caught them emerging..

7 bucks for two ootheca, not too bad :) I'm releasing these into the back yard to guard my beans (hopefully before dying)

This is partially reliving a childhood experience (which my mother no doubt will damn me forever for) of finding one in the wild, and the two week later infestation of mantids in our house :)

They make great garden pest killers. Kind of the "organic" way to use something other than pesticides.

Never would have guessed home depot would carry it though... wish homedepots here would sell cool stuff like that (spose it would have to be native to here though... think only eastern and coastal canada have mantids... and most of the U.S. of course..)

They are already here, and not invasive. As I said, I found these in the wild in the past...

They were introduced here, and they are beggining to become a pest. The problem is that they not only eat the bad bugs but the good bugs too, and because they do so well in this climate their population has exploded. In the future the may become a problem species. That's not to say don't release them in your garden, your two ootheca will have no real impact.

I got these at either the OSH or the Home Depot now that I think about it (I was going to both) on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito. Of the I-80 East exit to Potreto Ave is the OSH, a few blocks down is the Home Depot. One of my ootheca is in the fridge right now, because I was afraid there'd be too many with two - you're welcome to it, I live in Richmond off the highway if you're in the area.

Hey thx for the offer but I don't have a car right no. I figure if they had them over there then chances are they might have them over here (I live ten minutes away from San Francisco) so I'll check them out.
