Kiwi safe for millipedes?

I have a book stating that tropical fruits contain strong acids and should not be fed to millipedes...but they seem to like kiwi. Is it harmful to them? Or is this fruit safe?

Thank you very much for the answers! :worship:

One thing I have noticed is that Kiwi seems to ferment.

Hm, good question I was wondering about that the other day. It seems like they can eat just about anything, but surely there are some things out there that would be harmful? Wouldn't want to poison the poor little guys by mistake.

I'll attempt almost any fruit, vegetable or fungus but a lot goes uneaten and the softer stuff, like kiwi, just promotes more grain mites. The rotten wood in the substrate still gets more attention from the 'pedes. Although, slimy spinach/kale/hardy greens do get eaten readily.

apple, banana, cantaloupe, carrot, chicken mash (I prefer Purina Mills Sunfresh Recipe Layena), corn, cucumber (unwaxed cut in rounds), decomposing oak leaves, decomposing oak wood, dry dog kibble, fish food, green beans, green pepper, kiwi, leaf lettuce, mango, melons, mushrooms (love sliced portobello), peanut butter, pear, poached chicken breast (shredded), potato, pumpkin (cut in large pieces, skin on), romaine lettuce (red or green), spinach, squash (cut in rounds), sweet potato, tomato (split), water melon.

Grain mites? I guess that's what those little brown soil dwelling critters are. I photographed them in close up and need to post pictures sometime. I guess no real worries about those then, I guess they don't harm the pedes, but confirmation would be appreciated.

I also have noticed that the pedes love the leaves and wood--more than the veggis. Most of the food I put in also goes uneated. Mushrooms and grapes seem to be common exceptions. In regards to mushrooms, those poisonous to us should be poisonous to them, or could they eat almost anything? I'd love a link to a site identifying mushrooms, as the pedes love them, and fresher the better I guess. The Florida pedes seem to be content with only leaves and wood.

Spydrhunter, that's a pretty exhaustive list, LOL! Thanks for the great info!

Peanut butter? That's a first although I don't doubt that they'll eat it. I just envision a millipede with PB all over it's mug like a dirty trailer park toddler;)

Grain mites are a pain in the arse but not particularly dangerous to the 'pedes. In large numbers they can be obnoxious and I suppose could be deleterious if they caused spiracle blockage but I think that's a big if. If it's so bad that they're literally crawling all over the cage floor it's probably time for a substrate change(or microwave/bake it at low temps)...just remember that eggs are buried and if you have mature mates, you'll want to sift through the substrate to retrieve any eggs first. With mushrooms, it's best to just go w/ stuff you can find in produce.

Well, let's clarify one thing: does Kiwi have strong acids? If no, it's safe. Need someone to do that litmus paper test :). I guess I could use an aquarium PH test kit on the juice.
