Definitely is moist! This species lives in deep humid burrow so this condition is necessary for his keeping.

Actually, this species comes from a very arid region of Kenya and does well with drier substrate. Of those that I've kept, I keep the substrate dry and pour water on only part of it every few weeks or so.

Here's a good article:

Keep the substrate very moist ? with african species ??? where did you read that

Its true they get in burrow to get more comfortable temperature, because outside its very very hot. The substrate is very dry from what i've read, in captivity they will do well with a dry substrate and water dish. I dont keep my African BONE DRY but ... still much more dry then my tropical species.

They're probably getting some more humidity in their burrow, thats why I did'nt said bone dry, your point was'nt totally false, but saying to keep this species moist is'nt true imo

I keep mine dry, with a water dish that is continuously being filled up with substrate, or being turned upside down. That being said, the water that is spilled out of the dish every few nights is all that goes into his/her peat. Since I hardly ever see the little guy(hoping for a gal though) I assume its happy since it digs a new tunnel every night :D

Very moist? Did I said it?
Pterinochilus is african spider too, but he lives on a really dry substrate unlike crawshayi.

I have had good luck keeping them on deep substrate with a water dish providing most of the humidity. I do occasionally add water to the substrate, just enough so that there is some moisture visible in the lowest level of the tank. Keeping them too moist may cause them to lose legs, a phenomenon that's occasionally reported among C. crawshayi keepers. On the whole, I would advocate erring on the side of keeping them too dry rather than too moist, as long as a water dish is always available.
