So I have a few questions, first I'm concidering purchasing a King Baboon, Citharischius crawshayi (Pelinobius muticus) and was wondering what the concencus is on this T (general thoughts). I know that they are typically very aggresive and not something you would want to handle. This isn't really a problem as I don't really handle my animals, prefer to not stress them and keep them as display animals mainly. From the research I've done there are alot of reports on their venom being stronger then other T's, wondering if anyone can elaborate on this ( is a bite dangerous or just really painful)? Lastly, when using the scientific name which one is most prefered I've included the two and was wondering why there is two?

Pelinobius muticus is the current species name; C. crawshayi was used up until last year when it was deemed incorrect (the reasoning I can't exactly recall). P. muticus was probably a senior name....

They can be defensive though I haven't found them to be inordinately more defensive than most other OWers (or even some NWers). Their bite is supposed to be very painful with lots of fun effects; don't get bit. But they're easy to work with (aren't that fast, don't fly, etc). If you don't handle and you're careful during cage transfers, you should be fine.

As an aside, a lot of people complain about them being pet holes, with mine, she's the complete opposite. Is out most of the time, day or night, and is always food-aggressive. Gorgeous Ts!

well as far as a display tarantula my P. muticus never really comes out of its burrow, because of this i put a large piece of flag stone (cork bark will work also) on the side of it enclosed so that i can see inside its burrow. i agree with jbm150 about aggression, mine isnt overly defensive just be careful when doing cage transfers or maintenance.

Pelinobius muticus are awesome tarantulas. They can be very deffensive. Of course being old world thier venom is bad, and can have lasting affects. Some of them will burrow deep and almost never come out. Some will not burrow,or be out alot. It just depends on the specimen. I currently have 3 females, and 3 males.

check this out, they are not super aggressive like they are made out to be. However when put under stress they will bite and its apparently medically significant. But as you can see during cage maintenance and rehousing if done right there is little to no risk :)

mine does the same thing. i made it so she built her tunnel down the side of the tank so i can see inside, and everytime i take off the lid she run to the entrance of her burrow and waits for food or the defend her home.
